From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader
In 1927, with an air of destiny, Sem and Margaret Bendheim opened for business as importers and distributors of specialty glass. They had one basic goal: to provide their customers with a wide variety of products from the world's finest glass manufacturers.
Setting up shop in a storefront in downtown Manhattan, the Bendheim's built a successful business by forging important relationships - relationships which still exist today - and providing their customers with consistently high quality products and service.
In the 1950's Sem and Margaret's son-in-law, Fred Jayson, moved the burgeoning business to Tribeca, once the industrial heart of New York City and now offering a trendy art scene, 4 star restaurants and boutiques. The Bendheim Building, located at 122 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10013, houses the company's unique glass showroom - the world's first, displaying over 2,000 samples of glass to be experienced hands-on and experimented with in a variety of ways.
Responding to Customer Needs
By the 1980's, Fred Jayson confidently passed the torch to his sons, Robert, Donald and Steven, who continue to run Bendheim with the same passion, pride and forward thinking that has nurtured the company's growth over the past eighty years. In response to the growing demand for Bendheim products in the mid-1990's, Bendheim West was established in Oakland, California as a sales and distribution center, perfectly positioning the company to expand business in North America, Europe and the Far East. To further fulfill customer needs for shorter lead times and lower costs, Bendheim opened an environmentally conscious, state-of-the-art glass fabrication facility in Passaic, New Jersey. Bendheim is now 100% vertically integrated, providing customers with highest quality, shorter lead times, on-time delivery and reduced costs.
Making It Easier to Design & Build With Glass
After eight decades, the family owned and operated business continues to provide high quality products, cutting edge technology, outstanding customer service and the inspiration serving to build bridges between the mind's eye and reality.
Bendheim's long standing creative and strategic alliances with Europe's premier glass manufacturers have had a lasting influence on the glass marketplace, bringing innovations in product, technology and service. Historic preservation in America has benefited from the creation of Restoration Glass® - handmade window glass with slight distortions and imperfections identical to glass found in historical structures. Bendheim's Restoration Glass® has been used to restore the White House, Jefferson's Monticello home and continues to be used in the restoration of historical buildings, homes and antique furniture.
